The original Dragon Ball series has long been overshadowed by its sequel, Dragon Ball Z. I would chalk it up to the dubbing and the TV censorship. Dragon Ball is filled with comedy, and you can't dub or censor comedy and except it to be nearly as funny.

But make no mistake, Dragon Ball is the superior series. If you've seen the popular "over 9000" Youtube video, you've basically seen DBZ. It is a very formulaic show, though it is still entertaining to watch, provided you're watching the filler-less Kai version of DBZ. Dragon Ball, on the other hand, is a far more substantial show. Like DBZ, it is oriented around martial-arts fighting. Unlike DBZ, it is also character-oriented. This makes a big difference. Goku, the main character, starts the series as an adorable, carefree, incredibly naive boy. He ends the series as a calmer, cooler adult (though strangely enough he is childish again in the DBZ series). It is his continual and constant progression in strength, skill, and eventually maturity, which is one of the main highlights of the series.

However, the supporting cast of characters is no slouch either. There are so many creative and entertaining characters in the series, many of whom also develop throughout the series. For example, Buruma (or Bulma) starts out as an atypical bratty and self-absorbed teenage girl, but becomes much more mature and likable as the series progresses. Unfortunately, these great characters lose a lot of their personality in DBZ.

As the characters grow, so does the scope and seriousness of the conflicts they face. This is another one of the main highlights of the series. It begins as a comedic series, and elements of seriousness are introduced as the series progresses. This is why it is important to watch the series in its original Japanese language. The comedy is absolutely hilarious, and much of it comes from Goku's naivete towards pretty much everything. There is also a lot of humor revolving around the perverted Muten Roshi, but it's all in good fun, and I doubt anyone would be seriously offended.

Dragon Ball is broken up by three martial-arts tournaments. Each of these tournaments contain strategic fights that I find more engaging than the mindless powering-up battles of DBZ. It is during the second of these tournaments where there is a clear change in tone from mostly humorous to mostly serious. The intensity level ratchets up further when a major character dies shortly after the tournament. This last portion of the series is fantastic, because at this point you have already seen these characters in numerous humorous situations, continually growing, and to see them finally face a seriously threatening situation is very gratifying. Goku's battles during this portion of the series are more brutal than anything in DBZ.

In conclusion, Dragon Ball is a must-see series for anime fans.

Here's hoping for some Dragon Ball Dragon Boxes (Dragon Box Z has already made it the U.S.). These season sets look all right, but they are slightly zoomed in, and have occasional dirt and dust particles that were cleaned up on the Japanese Dragon Boxes. There's also a yellowish tinge to the picture that is again not present on the Dragon Boxes. Finally, the sound quality for the Japanese audio track is not as good as the track in the Dragon Box. The subtitles are very nice though.

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi is a three-dimensional fighting game involving a ton of Dragonball Z characters - even ones only seen briefly in the series.

The graphics are really the standout improvement here from previous Dragonball Z games. They do a great job of really maxing out the capabilities of the PS2. Not only are the cut scenes great, but the main gameplay features *giant* maps, with multiple terrain types (water, mountains, plants and more). You can move up to higher ground, draw your enemy into the lake to slow them down, and use other tactics. It makes the game much more like "playing in the Dragonball Z world" vs being a side-scrolling fighter.

The sound is definitely enhanced over previous versions, too. You can now choose to have the Japanese voices for your characters. It's ironic that in early days of gaming, games would come with only Japanese voices and US people would complain because they wanted to hear English. Nowadays we appreciate the language much better. By giving you the option, you can use whichever suits you best.

That's not to say that *all* sound in the game is stellar. They definitely could have included a more robust musical soundtrack - and general commentary. It often seems like those things are overlooked in fighting games, but if you're a fan and playing the game for multi hours a day, pretty much every day of the week, it wears on you quickly.

For actual gameplay, as mentioned, the maps are great. They have tons of characters which is really wonderful. It's fun to see some of the more obscure characters they included in the set. The movements and animations are great. However, the *controls* to get them to do things - and the skill of the AI at doing the same moves - are really unbalanced. We have played thousands of games on all systems over our reviewing career and there is just something not right about the combat controls here. So while you're struggling to get the combos activated, the enemy you're fighting is zipping through them smoothly and trouncing you. This is something you can "deal with" if you're patient and into the series - but if you're not an avid gamer, I can see someone getting frustrated very quickly and not playing the game again.

I'm all for having games that are difficult! I enjoy the challenge. But a game should be difficult because you are ramping up in technique. It shouldn't be difficult because the combo you typed in isn't accepted, or the key strokes react sluggishly so that your character dies before your commands are "heard".

Definitely a big step in the right direction - I really hope #2 takes care of a lot of these control issues. If they do, that will be a 5/5. For this version, I'll give it a 4/5 as a great game but with some issues.

DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi - fighting made fun - Miss Ryoko - Minnesota
I'm not a big fan of fighting games: where two characters fight against each other until one of their life line's is depleted. But throw in the fact it's a Dragonball Z fighting game, and suddenly, fighting is fun. I really like playing this game for reasons unknown (perhaps it has something to do with me being able to beat main bad guys with Krillin in a few blows ;-) hee hee). The graphics are pretty cool, and I really like the fact the original cast also voices the characters in the game (you can also play in the original Japanese!)

So, all in all, I enjoy this game and look forward to playing the others.

Ok everything about this game is good except the camera angles during battle. I liked it when you could actually see both you and your oponnents on the same screen,and it's even worse in split screen! Especially when your winning and your oponnent goes into hiding!! How good is Budokai Tenkaichi for the PS2? Extremeley! The graphics are excellent, and the gameplay rocks! I've played some good Street Fighter games before, but they are nothing compared to this. There are many game modes, and none of them are too hard to beat. The amount of characters are so many they are uncountable! One can play hours and hours of this game and not get bored or tired. The only bad thing is how hard Frieza is. I've fought him ten or twelve times, and I still haven't beaten him! But other than that the game rocks. A MUST-HAVE FOR DBZ FANS!!!!!

Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic series of which I've been a fan of since I was a little girl, and a long series at that. So, I was ecstatic to find the complete series. I won't review the series here (there's a wiki page for it and plenty of online reviews for the show itself), just the box set.

Packaging:
Overall, I would have preferred a single box set, but considering the series length, the four sets take up very little self space. Each season is two thinpaks (each containing two discs) in a slim, thin box. Honestly, I wish the box covers were a bit thicker and sturdier, these will tear and show wear quite easily I'm afraid. Each season has a different character theme for the box and thinpaks, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, etc, and character themes for set of menus on the dvd's. Every inch of the box sets are covered in nice art, from beautiful line art on the inside of the thinpaks to colorful group artwork on the covers; the only undecorated space is the dvd's themselves, which are white with minor detail, but it's a nice bit of symmetry and simplicity to contrast the rest of the detailed and colorful packaging.

Dvd's:
The dvd's themselves are fairly simple; the sound and picture quality is excellent in both English and Japanese, and there are two sets of English subtitles -one that matches the English dub and one that is a direct translation of the Japanese, and both are in small, white unobtrusive font which is nice in that they don't clutter up the screen but is harder to read. The special features are nothing special; usually just trailers for other anime or one-paragraph character profiles. The main menu has no fancy video intro but it does have a really awesome rock-theme that plays in the background. Still, it would have been nice to have different music for different menus, as YYH sports a varied and catchy arsenal of themes.

Another nitpick is the weird cutting off points for the seasons - the Dark Tournament Ark starts in box-set one and ends in box-set three, and considering the number of Dark Tournament Arc episodes on box-sets one and three it would have been easy to fit them on the dvd's for box-set two, or add one more thinpak. I would not have minded even a slimmer (and by extension cheaper) fourth and final box set (The Three Kings Arc is under twenty episodes) if it meant each box-set would truly only contain one season each. This is a minor, organization complaint, though. It only really becomes an annoyance if you were to go looking for a particular episode to re-watch and it turned out to not be in the box-set you expected because it was tacked on to the beginning of the box-set after or the ending of the box-set before.

In conclusion, it's a great value for the money simply due to the series size, and everything is done well, but it would have been nice to see the distributors go the extra mile and splurge on thicker packaging, consistency in the art and better special features. I'm satisfied with these four box sets but if a more complete single box set comes out I'll be the first to see these and buy that. If you are already a fan of the series I recommend picking these up, but if you just want to test it out I'd recommend you find another way to watch a few episodes (funimation sometimes offers free streaming of their anime on their website) and see if you genuinely like it before you lay your cash down, as these won't have great resale value if it turns out it's not your thing.

A satisfactory job, but not an exceptional one. 3.5/5 stars, which for convenience I'll round up.

EDIT: Also, be careful when putting the dvd's back in to secure them firmly; they tend to fall out of their places a lot easier than other thinpaks I have had, my season 2 box-set in fact had one loose dvd Not a deal-breaking, you just have to make sure they are secure instead of just throwing them in all willy nilly.

I'm not going to bother writing a review of the item itself seeing as I agree with everyone who gave the product 5 stars. However, do be warned that this box set is currently priced 15 to 20 dollars cheaper at Walmart and Target compared to Amazon's 50-ish price.

I just wanted to review Amazon itself and their selling of this item. The first volume 3 box set I received had the tiniest of scratches on Disc 15. However, this inhibited the playing of one whole episode and skipped over sections of others. Amazon was great in helping me replace this with another box set. The customer service I received was the best I have from anywhere and I got the new box set the day after calling. Amazon is a great seller to buy from!

Wow, wow, wow, can I say anything else?
These were both awesome movies! You bet I'll watch it more than twice!!
The History of Trunks is incredible, it gets more in dept what Trunks was telling Goku (in season 4) about what happened in his time. It goes in detail how a lot of things were, mostly with Trunks & Gohan! I am telling you, this movie is amazing!
Bardock: The father of Goku is an amazing movie! Funny, this movie reminds me of how we are born to serve God & follow Him and how so many things have crossed our paths to destroy us, yet we are still alive. Same with Goku, there were so many things to destroy Goku and some way he still survived (even when it was out of his hands, like when he was newborn) & look at him a great warrior. That kind of reminds me of how us humans can be the same way, have a great (not all wonderful perfect, but tough times too) will that God wants us to do & we are still living even though we could have been gone......makes you want to think you know?

And what a battle it is. Frieza's true fighting power is finally revealed in this amazing DVD. The first episode on this DVD is an all out fight between Goku and Frieza in which they both show some weird attacks that are great to watch. This includes Frieza playing "pinball" with Goku. (Well, that's what the back of the DVD calls it at least.) In the second episode, Frieza finally reveals how powerful he really is as the fight moves on. The episode also contains an amazingly funny filler debacle that will span three epsisodes. (The rest of this DVD and the first episode on the next DVD, Desperation.)

Yes, this three-episode filler debacle is where Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Bulma and the chaos that follows. The conclusion to it is in the next DVD, so be sure to check that out. The final episode shows Frieza reach new powers which are really high. He starts to take down Goku and the battle is incredible. As for the actual DVD features, there are no extra's, but you should be used to this. The cover is a screenshot from the DVD, but it is sort of misleading. It makes it look like Goku is winning when he is not. Anyway, this DVD is superb and deffinetaly a must-buy.

Dragon Ball Z - Frieza - Clash Overview

Goku and Frieza continue to match strength and wits on Namek. A clever underwater attack puts Goku on top until Frieza traps Goku in an energy ball. It's pinball style fun for Frieza as he bats Goku around, but being trapped in the exploding ball proves to be a deadly game for Goku! Episodes 73-75.

(I am not just some kid, please read my review!) I picked up this little game system for a good price at a department store in my area, and I am pretty happy with it.

Pros:The graphics were as good as can be expected, the gameplay was fun, there are some pretty sweet special attacks , and it does require some skill. The plug and play systom is idiotproof, any one can figure out how to set up and play it (Oh, and read the manuel to learn all the moves, or at least the how to play sections!) Also, there are two mini games, a kind of lame "Pong"-type remake, and a pinball types game that I think is tons-o-fun!(0ne problem, however, if you mess up on pinball, you have to start over; which stinks cuz it's an adventure in itself, I
reccomend "easy" mode.) Finaly, there are interchangeable skill levels that can make it better or worse.

Cons:The story mode is short! On easy, it only takes around 15 minutes. Plus, there are only five characters to choose from (each with different attack style, I'm a Piccolo man myself). One issue I personaly had was that the controler literally looks like something (heh heh) out of a cartoon. In other words, I wont be bringing it out to show my friends any time soon, the joystck is so wannabe cool, its dorky!

A few parting words, i hope you found my review helpful, I would reccomend this toy to anyone who wants to have a little fun. But remember, it really only is a toy, dont expect XBox 360 quality.

I played this game and it is awesome! I love it!
Especially how I could do super attacks so easily!
It gets you intense, especially when you and the other fight are equal, just love those moments!
Gotta put it on hard mode or something because its a little easy for me.

this game has the same engine as budokai 3 for ps2 and that was my favorite dbz game the only thing i didnt like is that you cant just transform whenever you want you have to pick the transformed version of the character

this game is fun just like shin budokai another road but another road is better but this game is fun to i still play this even though i have dbz another road i can still play this one. The story mode in here was good but it was really a movie and a little short but it was great. Nice grapic to in both of the shin buodaki's.

Great Game - Brie - USA
It provided me countless hours/days of fun. I first went through dragon road mostly getting by the battles by sheer luck, but after the first few I actually had to know what I was doing. It was a bit harder with the switching of characters, but specials did it for me. After I finished it, I decided to get Zs on the battles which gave me more countless hours of fun.

I tried out survival and the time one as well. Survival is easy, but gets harder torward the 20/30s. I had to be cheap and use insane specials to get past most of them. Time attack is more fun and less worrying...in a way. Almost the same as survival, but I find it to be more fun.

There's training which is definitely useful for trying out those new moves you learned off the internet and friends.

The shop is cool, but not really that interesting. It has wallpapers and these icons. There's quite a few of them, but useless for me.

I think that's about it. Dragon road, survival, time attack, and this mission thing. This is a game you'll come back to for fun, but after you basically master the game, you won't be spending days in your room playing it. You'll pick it up every now and then when your bored and beat some guys up. It has amazing graphics and the combat system is interesting.

Overall, this is truly a great fighting game. Tons of hours will be spent into this game unless you have played some other DBZ games. Beating up people is just too addicting in this game.

Okay not going to bother reviewing much about the product because its great, and was just what I was looking for. And is a lot better collection than the Orange season box setes Funi released before these. These are way better then those, BY FAR.
The 41 episodes look and sound great. The sound is amazing and the visuals are still mostly unedited meaning its as close to the original as you can get.

Now I don't think all are like this, but mine was slightly falling apart when I got it. The DvD cases and disks were fine. But the main yellow box that holds the 2 dvd cases and book that come with it was already falling apart. I mean its still sturdy and everything, but the sticky papers that hold the box together were starting to come off. Meaning soon the box might fall apart. And the book that comes with it was in good condition. Aside from the fact that the pages at the back of the book were starting to fall off the binding off the case when I already got it.
And the art work on the binding of the book felt as if it was coming off.

But I might have just been unlucky and gotten a bad egg. Cause I doubt this happened to all of them. But rest assured, that despite the problems that came with mine, they have nothing to do with the overall quality of the product.

First off, this is a fairly solid game. I didn't expect it to be Soul Calibur or anything and it definitely wasn't but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. Its about as good as non-Tenkaiichi Budokai 3, but its different enough that it doesn't feel like you were conned out of your money if you already had it. It doesn't have Dragon Rush, which added some to 2-player but against the game, you can pretty much just close your eyes, press your thumb down on all the buttons and whichever it registers is just as well. Also gone is the world map and flying around looking for stuff and I thanked a lot of deities when I saw that. Not that the story mode here is without flaw. There are these long narrations that, when I played, could not be skipped and they're really not that interesting until the GT saga but only because I'm not all that familiar with it.

If I had to say something negative about it other than 'its not really a masterpiece', its that the roster is more padded than a sixth grader's bra. I'm kind of surprised Bra wasn't in it. I know there are a lot of characters in the Dragon Ball universe and each one has at least a couple of fans, but thats not what I mean. For example, theres King Piccolo, Piccolo (early) and Piccolo, three separate characters. I can kind of see Piccolo and King Piccolo being different because I think they're technically different people, but really the difference as far as the game is concerned is sub-negligible. King Piccolo is a little thinner and doesn't wear the awesome cape and turban, but if you choose Piccolo's alternate costume, you can hardly tell the difference. I can't help but think maybe 10-15 characters could easily have been cut and nobody would even notice. Would anyone not buy this game if they found out General Blue and Devilman weren't in it? I don't even remember Arale, she could have been made up by Atari for all I know. Or if they just couldn't cut them, make them alternate versions of one character. All Vegetas are available but they're all in a Vegeta sub-selection and not four in the main one. I know its a minor complaint and it isn't going to stop, but it really does seem like false advertising to claim 'OVER FORTY-SEVEN MILLION CHARACTERS!!!' and there are actually only about fifty. Remember how Mortal Kombat used to be dependent on color-swapping to add characters? Similar deal here.

I bought this game not because I'm a huge DBZ fan, though I do like it some, but just because I wanted a fighting game where you could fight fast, use powers and when you had shown your opponent who rules, you could blow their sorry ass into the next die-mension. This game delivered that. The controls take some time, especially if you're used to non-Tenkaiichi style, but once you've got them down, it becomes pretty useful. The combat takes thought as well as speed and familiarity with a fighter's abilities, which I like. This is the DBZ game I wish I had had when I was really into the anime.

Do I recommend it? Well, it has kind of limited appeal. It is definitely DBZ-ish so if you demand realistic fighters, its probably not for you. You don't need to be a huge fan, but you do need to be at least accepting of DBZ to enjoy it. If you know someone who insists the show is childish or stupid, it'll be an uphill battle to make them player 2. But since you're looking into the game, I'm going to assume thats not a problem for you. It is a fun game so, yeah, I recommend it. I got my copy for used and if they had a How Awesome Is This Game ray (patent pending) and I knew what it was like before paying it, I could have been convinced to pay maybe -20. I wouldn't rob a bank to play it, but it was well worth the money.

I remember playing this game for hours and not get tired of playing it. The moves are way better than the ones in part 2 and the Graphics are way better. I loved how they changed story mode you can fight while the storyline is playing, which is Great. It's hard to get tired of the game since they give you alot to do. Overall, I give this game 5 out 5 stars.

P.S. I Wished they would make this game into a PS3 Version.

WOW I love this game. I practally play this game all the time. I got this game as a reward frome my dad by moving up a reading group in school so when I went to game stop I was looking for a good game. they didnt have a lot of selections and I didnt want to leave empty handed but then I saw this game I thought it was a another average game but when I tried this game out I actually flip my lid. I was breath less by the time I stop playing. I recomend this game to everyone no matter if the kid is 4 get the game.
